How a Simple Social Media Scroll Led to Lives Changing
Haggai partners play a vital role in fulfilling the ministry’s mission and vision. Your support enables Haggai leaders to grow through the Haggai Leader Experience, empowering them to share hope within their communities and cultures, often for the first time. Ashley Knoll, a partner through Haggai’s monthly Venture giving community, came across a Haggai social media post while scrolling during the COVID lockdown. Intrigued, she clicked to learn more.
“I was blown away. I’ve never seen another ministry quite like it — one that focuses on sharing the gospel and partnering with other countries to equip their own people to do the same,” she says. She realized that through these leaders, the gospel was advancing, contextualized through relationships and culture.
A Michigan native, Ashley is nearing a decade of accounting work at General Motors. Homeschooled alongside her younger brother, she credits her parents with instilling a strong faith background. Although she learned about different worldviews growing up, it wasn’t until college that she met her first non-Christian friends.
Today, Ashley is one of the few believers in her office and takes her role as a marketplace Christian seriously, much like Haggai leaders worldwide. Her approach is relational, striving to reflect Christ and be a light where she has influence.
“I’ve learned that many people have had some experience with the church or with Christians, but too often, they see no real difference between believers and the world. If we look the same, what makes us stand out? Why would they want to come to church? What’s the point?” she reflects. “That’s why I believe it’s important to build relationships that look different. I try to meet people where they are and consistently show up for them.”
In her workplace, Ashley strives to go beyond the world’s standards, showing up for colleagues through unwavering integrity, addressing conflict with love, and diffusing tense situations with peace. Her commitment to relationships also extends to the Bible study she cofounded during the isolation of the pandemic.
The group started with 10 friends wanting to deepen their understanding of the Bible. Over the past four years, they’ve shared burdens and joys, growing closer to each other and to Christ. This emphasis on relationships continues to draw Ashley to Haggai’s work worldwide, as Haggai leaders bring restoration to their communities through the gospel. Last year, Ashley’s worlds intersected when her Bible study group hosted a Haggai leader who is leading a revival in Mongolia.
That evening left a profound impact on Ashley and her friends, reminding them of God’s ongoing work. Ashley’s contributions have gone toward equipping leaders — 25,000 of whom have been trained since she began partnering with Haggai. She continues to lead, pray, and bring restoration to her community in Michigan and, through her partnership with Haggai, to communities around the world. And it all began with one click and a heart open to God’s leading.
