This Book Changed My Life
At midday, students can be seen eating lunch in the cafeteria or heading to the library with their books. It could be any college campus, but this is at a university in Morocco, where Haggai leader Dr. Marwan Petros* is a professor. He enjoys teaching but also appreciates the opportunity to tell the majority non-Christian students about Jesus.
He says, “Many people have misconceptions about Christianity and the Bible. I try to answer their questions with the reason for my faith.” Dr. Petros’ testimony is restoring people’s understanding of God’s love and giving them the knowledge of the salvation that Jesus offers. While many are being transformed through his story, even more are impacted by the way Dr. Petros lives out his faith.
He tells the story of a neighbor who noticed a difference in his behavior and asked him, “What is the book you read that changed you?” The neighbor was on his way to a book fair in the city and Dr. Petros was able to give him a direct answer. “This book,” he said as he handed his neighbor a copy of the Bible. He is excited to share that the neighbor is now opening his heart to discussions of Jesus.
Dr. Petros attended a Virtual Haggai Leader Experience (VHLE) in 2021 and described it as “the most in-depth and eye-opening training of biblical leadership” he had ever encountered. He says, “I might have overlooked or failed to fully understand what God has to say in his Word about our mission and cultural mandate if I hadn’t been invited to join the VHLE!”
With this new understanding and tools he learned to share the Gospel, Dr. Petros has been able to set personal and ministry goals. He wants to take the Good News to areas in the city that have not heard about Jesus, teach new believers the foundations of the Christian faith, and train leaders to equip other believers. His vision is to multiply the number of Christians in his country and even plant churches in other nations.
So, whilst tourists soak up the sun on the beach, ride camels, and walk up to the ruins of the royal fort, Haggai leader Dr. Petros is sharing the Gospel with students and bringing restoration to his city.
